What is Express Entry
Express Entry is an online immigration application system used by the Canadian government to manage applications for permanent residence for skilled workers. The system is designed to be efficient and quick, processing most applications in six months or less.
Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria for one of the three federal economic immigration programs (Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class) can create an online profile and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in immigrating to Canada through Express Entry.
The government then uses a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to rank applicants based on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and other criteria. Those with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residency through regular draws held by the government.
Express Entry is designed to attract skilled workers who can contribute to the Canadian economy and fill labour market shortages. The system has become a popular pathway for individuals seeking to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents.
The points are based on various factors, one of which is your language ability which is determined by a language test. You will be tested on your French or English language skills and can earn 50 additional bonus points for strong French skills even if it is your 2nd language.
Other questions concern your nationality, age, education, and work experience as well as details on your family members. If you are amongst the candidates with the highest scores you will be invited to apply for permanent residency.
Express Entry provides a pathway to permanent residence for skilled workers in Canada or overseas. For potential skilled foreign workers, Express Entry will result in fast processing times of six months or less. Canada needs skilled workers in various trades, it has come up with the Express Entry Program a program introduced in 2015. The Express Entry Program is completed all online on the Government of Canada website. It allows people to submit profiles of their skills, education, and employment history to gain points through a specific calculator designed by the government. Depending on the types of traits that an applicant has, they are ranked through various factors and get points. The profiles which get the most points are then invited to apply for Canadian permanent residence.
Which Programs Are Covered by Express Entry?
Express Entry covers three federal economic immigration programs:
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): This program is for skilled workers with foreign work experience who have been selected based on their ability to contribute to the Canadian economy.
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): This program is for skilled trades workers who have at least two years of work experience in a skilled trade and meet the other eligibility criteria.
Canadian Experience Class (CEC): This program is for skilled workers who have at least one year of Canadian work experience and meet the other eligibility criteria.
In addition to these three programs, some Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) also use the Express Entry system to select candidates for their provincial streams. These streams are known as ‘enhanced’ nominations and provide additional points to candidates in the Express Entry pool.
Express Entry also allows eligible candidates to create a profile and be considered for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or Canadian Experience Class even if they have not received a provincial nomination.
Candidates from the Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Trades, and Provincial Nominee Program were eligible for this round of invitations.
Express Entry does not apply to Quebec
Candidates in the pool use a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). They have been selected as the highest-ranking candidates from the pool and invited to apply for permanent residence. Points are awarded based on core factors such as age, education, work experience, and language ability. The candidates who score maximum are issued Invitations to Apply for permanent residence via periodic immigration draws, mostly every two weeks
Eligibility to apply
