1. Open Stream: For Applicants Currently Working in Canada

This is the only stream you can currently apply for. To be eligible, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • You must be living in Canada.

    • You can be temporarily outside Canada (e.g., on vacation), but you must prove that Canada is your normal place of residence.

  • You must be authorized to work in Canada full-time.

    • Your job can be in any occupation.

    • It must be non-seasonal.

    • Your work authorization can come from:

      • valid work permit

      • Maintained Status (formerly known as “implied status”—you applied to extend your permit before it expired and are waiting for a decision).

      • Specific Public Policies (these are special, temporary immigration measures).

What Does NOT Count as Eligible Work Authorization

  • If you are living in Canada but your work permit has expired and you have not applied to extend it, you are not eligible.

  • If you are on a study permit and only authorized to work part-time, or if you are a visitor without work rights, you are not eligible.

2. Closed Stream: For Applicants Not Working in Canada

  • Status: This stream is currently closed and will open at a later, unspecified date.

  • Key Requirement: When it opens, applicants will need to prove they have enough money (proof of funds) to support themselves and their family members when they settle in Canada.

  • Action: You must wait for an official announcement from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for when this stream will begin accepting applications.

Key Takeaways

  • If you are currently inside Canada with a valid work permit (or maintained status) and working full-time in a non-seasonal job, you should check the official IRCC website to see if you can apply under the open stream.

  • If you are outside Canada or inside Canada without work authorization, you cannot apply yet. You must wait for the second stream to open and be prepared to show proof of settlement funds.

Important Note:  Always confirm all details and requirements on the official Government of Canada website before applying.
